We are reflecting on our win of the 2024 Gallagher Innovative Farming Award at the Beef + Lamb New Zealand Awards a couple of months ago. This prestigious recognition celebrates our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and family-centric farming practices.
A Family Endeavour
At Fernglen Farm, we have seamlessly integrated a 1,300-strong milking ewe herd into our traditional sheep and beef operation. This strategic diversification has enabled each family member to contribute uniquely, strengthening our business and family bonds. The judges praised our courage, scientific approach, and talent in developing this new venture, highlighting our farm as a shining example of innovative farming in New Zealand.
Commitment to Animal Welfare and Sustainability
Our dedication to animal welfare is exemplified by our status as New Zealand’s first SPCA Animal Welfare Certified dairy farm. We prioritise the health and well-being of our sheep, ensuring ethical farming practices that align with our values and those of our customers. This commitment extends to our sustainable farming methods, which promote biodiversity and soil health while reducing our environmental footprint.
Innovative Sheep Milk Products
Our diversification into sheep milking has led to a range of nutritious and delicious products, including whole sheep milk, probiotic yoghurt, labneh, and farmhouse cheese. Sheep milk is easier to digest due to its unique protein structure and smaller fat globules, making it a gentle option for those who can’t tolerate cow’s milk. It is also packed with essential nutrients, containing higher levels of protein, vitamins, and minerals compared to cow and goat milk.
