What is the Best ‘Milk’ Alternative

What's the best cow milk alternative?

At Fernglen Farm, we believe that what you put into your body matters. This was the key driver as to why we first embarked on our sheep milk journey, it aligned heavily with our interest due to the easy digestion, nutrition and low environmental impact it has. Nestled in the rolling hills, our family-run farm has been dedicated to producing the highest quality sheep’s milk, focusing on sustainability, animal welfare, and the health of our customers. We’re excited to share why sheep’s milk, is the best tummy-friendly alternative to cow’s milk.

1. Easier to Digest Protein

From our experience working with nutritionists (my brother and business partner Ben – having a Masters in Human Nutrition helps too), we know that  there are three key reasons as to why sheep’s milk is more tummy friendly. One of the main reasons is its unique protein structure, it only contains A2-type proteins which seem to be a more tolerable structure. The A2 beta-casein in our sheep’s milk is less likely to cause digestive issues compared to the A1 beta-casein in most cow’s milk.

2. Lower Lactose Content

We know that lactose intolerance is a common issue for many, which is why we’re proud that our sheep’s milk contains lactose levels that are about half the ratio to what is found in cows milk. There are more nutrients in sheep’s milk, which means that the lactose level is much more diluted. This is a huge factor as to why most people who re sensitive to lactose, can actually tolerate sheep’s milk with no issues. While not entirely lactose-free, many of our customers who are lactose intolerant report that they can enjoy our sheep’s milk without the discomfort they experience with cow’s milk.

3. Shorter Fatty Chain Acids

The second main reason is sheep produce milk with a higher proportion of smaller fat globules and shorter-chain fatty acids, making it gentler on the digestive system as well. Some studies show that it can take just 45 minutes to digest sheep’s milk and it can take up to 6 hours to digest cow’s milk.

4. Nutrient-Rich

Sheep’s milk isn’t just easier on your stomach; it’s also packed with nutrients. Here’s why it milk stands out:

  • Protein: Our milk contains more protein (about 60% more), which is essential for muscle repair and growth. Our sheep are fed a natural, wholesome diet that enhances the protein quality of their milk.
  • Calcium: Important for bone health, our milk has about 60% more calcium than cow’s milk.
  • Vitamins: Rich in essential vitamins such as B12, B2 (riboflavin), and vitamin D, our sheep’s milk supports energy production and immune function.
  • Minerals: Our milk provides higher levels of zinc and magnesium, crucial for maintaining a healthy immune system and muscle function.

5. Rich and Creamy Flavour

At Fernglen Farm, we take pride in the rich and creamy flavour of our sheep’s milk. The natural diet and care we provide to our sheep result in milk that’s not only nutritious but also delicious. Whether you’re adding it to your morning coffee, pouring it over cereal, or using it in your favourite recipes, our sheep’s milk offers a satisfying taste and texture that many find superior to other milk alternatives.

6. Fewer Allergens

We understand how frustrating food allergies can be. Cow’s milk is a common allergen, especially in children. Sheep’s milk, with its different protein structure, is less likely to trigger allergic reactions. Many of our customers with cow’s milk allergies or sensitivities have found relief by switching to our sheep’s milk, enjoying their favourite foods and drinks without the adverse effects.

7. Sustainable Farming Practices

Sustainability is at the heart of what we do at Fernglen Farm. Our sheep graze on diverse pastures, promoting healthy ecosystems and requiring less land and water than large scale plant alternatives, in fact the only water we use is what falls from the sky onto our land! By choosing our sheep’s milk, you’re supporting a more sustainable and environmentally friendly product.

A Personal Touch

At Fernglen Farm, we’re more than just producers of sheep’s milk—we’re a family passionate about providing wholesome, tummy-friendly dairy alternatives. We are the only SPCA animal Welfare Certified dairy farm in NZ which we are very proud of and this epitomises our passion for animals. Conclusion

Sheep’s milk is an excellent tummy-friendly alternative to cow’s milk. It’s easier to digest, lower in lactose, nutrient-rich, and has a rich, creamy flavour that’s hard to beat. With fewer allergens and a commitment to sustainable farming practices, our sheep’s milk is a choice you can feel good about.
